Hotels in Bangkok

Bangkok is a dynamic and cosmopolitan city which draws in many visitors with its unique blend of culture and modernity. Its numerous temples, shopping malls and famous entertainment venues attract millions of international visitors every year, thus making it an attractive all-round destination. Before setting out to explore this city and its many offerings, it would be wise to search for a hotel in Bangkok that best suits your budget and purpose of visit - be it for business or pleasure. We shall now proceed to guide you in selecting the right hotels for your specific preference and budget.

You would be pleased to note that in Bangkok, hotels generally offer great value, no matter which price category you are looking at. This is largely due to the cheapness of the Thai Baht in relation to your home currency, which means that you can get a mid-range hotel with a 3- to 4-star rating for a similar price as a 2-star hotel in the West. Hotels of different price ranges can also be found throughout the city, making it convenient to find suitable accommodation no matter which part of the city you choose to be your base. In particular, budget hotels, which are normally located further from the city centre in other cities, can be easily found in close proximity to the hustle and bustle in the middle of Bangkok. This makes it especially attractive to travelers on a tight budget, as it saves you money for other activities such as shopping and nightlife which are two of the main draws of this vibrant city.

On top of it, you are also likely to encounter great service and a slew of modern amenities and inclusions such as complimentary daily breakfast, flat screen TVs in your room, business facilities and fitness centres, among others, making these hotels truly value for money. In general, hotels here offer lower room rates during the off-season which runs from March to November. We shall now offer some recommendations on where you can stay in Bangkok depending on your budget.

Travelers who want to indulge in a stay in a deluxe 5-star hotel in a central location should consider the Sukhumvit district, which is located right in the heart of Bangkok and is home to a variety of brand-name international hotel chains and boutique hotels. By staying here, you are in close proximity to numerous international fine dining and nightlife entertainment venues which draw in a mixed crowd of affluent Thais and expatriates, which lends an international flavour to the clubbing scene here. Besides being able to enjoy the high life in this district, you can also easily travel to other parts of Bangkok due to its centrally-accessible location. The Silom district, where the headquarters of major financial institutions are situated, likewise provides similar high-end accommodation options which are nearby the classiest restaurants and bars in Bangkok.

While there are many less expensive budget hotels scattered all across Bangkok, including in the high-end Sukhumvit and Silom districts, the best known area popular with budget travelers and backpackers is Khaosan Road. Here you can find a variety of cheap accommodation that ranges from guesthouses with the most basic facilities to decent 3-star hotels. The widespread presence of bars, restaurants and clubs, that are tailored to the needs of budget-conscious travelers exude a casual atmosphere while offering value for money dining and entertainment in the area. Other than Khaosan Road, inexpensive hotels can also be found at Yaowarat Road, which forms the core of Bangkok's Chinatown where you can find vendors touting a large selection of wares at low prices. Travelers looking for close proximity to the most comprehensive shopping options in Bangkok can also consider a stay in Siam Square which is well-known for being close to a myriad of shopping and entertainment amenities.

To get around Bangkok from your hotel, you have several options in the form of taxis / Tuk Tuk, the rail system, river transport and buses. However, we recommend the rail system, which consists of the Sky Train (BTS), and Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) as they get you around Bangkok and to the major tourist attractions in a cheap, clean and efficient manner. We do not recommend road transport due to the chronic traffic congestion problem that Bangkok is notorious for. However you can consider taking a short taxi ride to the nearest BTS or MRT station if your hotel is not within walking distance of one.

Travelers Rate Bangkok As the #1 City in the World

Travel and Leisure, an American based magazine devoted to tourism, recently published their 13th annual travel poll. Bangkok, Thailand's cosmopolitan capital city, was voted by their readers as the top city destination in the world. In the poll of the world's best hotels,, India and luxury tented camp resorts in East and South Africa dominated the rankings. Keep in mind that Travel & Leisure's readership is mostly American - as travelers, they are not the budget, backpacker types and their choice in accommodations is geared towards deluxe and luxury resort hotels.

Why is Bangkok #1? I can understand why travelers from the west (farangs) would be attracted to the City of Angels. Bangkok has that magical allure - in many respects it is very westernized but at the same time it is so very exotic and foreign. Pluses are fantastic shopping opportunities, a variety of fascinating cultural attractions, a great selection of fine restaurants representing cuisines from around the world - Thai, Indian, Chinese, Italian, French, American, Japanese etc - and a most titillating nightlife. In addition, Bangkok has some of the finest luxury hotels in the world - not necessarily where I stay when I go to Bangkok, as I'm partial to more humble surroundings. For a large city, Bangkok is one of the safest in the world. On the downside, like most big cities, Bangkok has horrendous traffic jams and the air is very polluted. Bottom line, if you're a foodie and shopping is your thing, then you'll love Bangkok.

My personal take - I must admit that while I am not particularity fond of big cities, I find the City of Angels to be absolutely fascinating. Despite concessions to modernity and to the West, Bangkok carefully maintains the essence of Siam culture - the old ways and traditions remain as strong as ever. Notwithstanding numerous trips there, Bangkok continues to be a puzzle and mystery to me. Maybe that's the reason I keep returning - to solve the puzzle.

Things to Do in Bangkok Near Skytrain Silom Line Stations

Bangkok's Skytrain is a quick, cheap and efficient way to get around Bangkok. This guide will let you know where to get off the Skytrain for some of the major attractions in Bangkok.

The Silom line is one of two lines on Bangkok's elevated BTS Skytrain mass transit system that covers much of the areas of the capital that are of interest to tourists. The other line is the Sukhumvit line and these two lines intersect at Siam station, one of the major stations on the network.

The Silom line runs from National Stadium in the Siam area, interchanges with the Sukhumvit line at Siam, then heads down through the Silom area and crosses the majestic Chao Phraya River and continues on for two stations to Wongwian Yai. If these names mean nothing to you, don't worry because I'm going to show you some of the interesting things to see and do near a lot of these stations.

National Stadium

This is the first station on the Silom line and around here you will find one of the huge youth meccas of Bangkok, MBK, Center (Mah Boon Krong). This is a multi-storey mall that has a lot of fashion stores (and knock-offs), as well as a lot of restaurants and a multi-screen movie theater. There are also a large number of electronics stores and this is where a lot of people purchase their mobile phones. You can also get your iPhone unlocked here and put in a local SIM card so you can avoid extravagant data charges while on vacation.

Jim Thompson House, a museum of the life and times of the famous silk baron is also in this area. Jim Thompson silk stores are ubiquitous throughout Bangkok and he certainly left his mark on the country. This museum was built inside the beautiful home he built and is a fascinating look into Bangkok of days gone.

Siam

Siam station is one of the busiest stations on the Skytrain network and also serves as an interchange between the Silom and Sukhumvit lines. It is also where you alight if you are in the mood for some serious shopping.

Siam Paragon, Thailand's most upscale shopping complex opened in December 2005 and covers more than 400,000 square meters. Just about every luxury brand that you can think of has their flagship store here amongst the 250 establishments housed here.

Within Siam Paragon you will find the 21 screen Siam Paragon Cineplex, which also features an IMAX theater. Going to the cinema is very cheap in Thailand, with tickets costing the equivalent of about USD 3. You may want to spend a little more though and try the truly luxurious VIP seats, which offer reclining leather seats with blankets and waiter service.

The basement of Siam Paragon houses Siam Ocean World- the largest aquarium in Southeast Asia, covering 10,000 square meters. The aquarium is home to 30,000 marine animals of 400 species.

Across the street from Siam Paragon is the lively district of Siam Square, a trendy area of shops and restaurants popular with young Bangkokians. This area is always lively and it is a great place to see emerging trends. You will also find Siam Discovery Center here as well as a Hard Rock Café.

Sala Daeng

This is the station you get off at if you want to see the famous Patpong. Patpong has nightly markets that are very popular with tourists selling everything from fake designer jeans and watches to pirated CDs and DVDs as well as a lot of handicrafts.

Patpong is perhaps better known though for it's many go-go bars which line both sides of the street which houses the night markets, as well as a number of other nearby streets.

There are also a number of clubs, restaurants and bars in this area, but they mostly cater to foreign tourists and can be overpriced.

Saphan Taksin

Saphan Taksin was the final station on the Silom line until May 2009 when the network was extended across the Chao Phraya River two more stations to cater to the many commuters who live in Thon Buri.

Being by the river, Saphan Taksin has a ferry wharf where many local ferries, Chao Phraya river express boats, as well as shuttle boats from many of the riverside 5 star hotels drop off and pickup passengers. Also a number of the dinner cruise companies depart from here.

A free cruise can be had by boarding one of the hotel riverboats that taxi guests up and down the river. The Bangkok Marriott Resort & Spa is about 15 minutes downriver and provides two teak boats that go back and forth between this pier and the hotel all day until late in the evening. You don't have to be a guest at the resort to board this boat and it provides a fantastic view of the Bangkok skyline at no charge.

The Skytrain is a very inexpensive and efficient way to travel around Bangkok, with fares ranging from 15 Baht (around 45 US cents), to a maximum of 40 Baht (USD1.20). The stations are clearly signposted in English and there are also announcements inside the carriages in English.

With the streets of Bangkok being notoriously clogged most of the day with seemingly endless traffic, the Skytrain is a smart way to move around Thailand's largest city.

For a convenient place to stay in Bangkok, check out our comprehensive list of hotels near BTS Skytrain stations, as well as many other thoughtful lists of hotels we have put together at http://www.reservethaihotels.com.

3 Important Issues to Consider in Applying For a UK Spouse Visa in Thailand

Thai Spouses of UK citizens who wish to join their partner and settle in the UK are qualified to apply for a UK Spouse Visa in Thailand. The UK Spouse visa will allow the holder to live and work in the UK for two years. Near the expiration of the allowed time to stay, if the couple is still married and living together, the Thai spouse may then apply for a permanent residency in the UK. There are three significant issues to consider before filing an application for a UK Spouse Visa in Thailand. These are as follows:

1. The Legal Marriage and genuine ongoing relationship.

This can be supported by submitting the original copy of the Marriage Certificate along with other documents. Another way of proving the marital relationship is by showing pictures or recorded videos taken during the wedding ceremony or the actual Marriage Registration. You must be able to show exchange of correspondence such us letters, postcards, chats, emails, telephone bills, photos together and even receipts of money transfers. Plane tickets, boarding passes and hotel bookings can also be used as proof to show that you have done things and traveled together. Both the applicant and sponsor should also write a letter about their relationship stating how and when the first meeting took place, how the relationship developed and express each eagerness and desire to be with each other to spend life together as family.

2. The Sponsor's current Financial Position and Accommodation in the UK.

The UK Embassy in Bangkok and its commercial organization partner, VFS, will check if the sponsor has the capability to support the future spouse's stay in the UK without asking help from the public funds. To affirm and establish this requirement, the sponsor must provide his/her latest six months bank statements, employment certificate, at least 3 months recent pay slips, house title deed, mortgage or contract with the landlord. To strengthen this requirement, a photo of the sponsor's house in the UK (including every room) is a must.

3. Age requirement is at least 21 years old.

This is very simple. If the applicant is below 21 years of age, the sponsor must wait until the applicant is 21 before applying for a spouse visa. This rule applies the same way to the sponsor. Thus, none of the couples must be under 21 during the application. Both of them must be of legal age for the Thai spouse to be issued a UK Spouse Visa in Thailand.
